JV volleyball teams finishes 3rd at Bangor

The Dowagiac junior varsity volleyball team finished third at the Bangor Invitational on Saturday.
The Chieftains won their pool after going 5-1 against Bangor, Hartford and Covert.
Dowagiac split with the host Lady Vikings, losing the first game 24-25 and winning the second, 25-24. The Chieftains then swept Hartford, 25-23 and 25-22, and Covert, 25-16 and 25-13.
In the semifinals, Kalamazoo Christian defeated Dowagiac, 7-25 and 9-25.
Kristan Stelmasiak and Morgan Tanzillo led Dowagiac with 11 kills each. Tanzillo also had a team-high 10 aces and 11 assists. Stelmasiak finished with six aces.
Ashley Morales finished with a team-high 16 assists. Haley Richter and Michele Dowsett both had five aces. Brittney Smith had two blocks.
Freshmen volleyball
The Dowagiac freshmen volleyball team went 1-7 at the Bangor Invitational on Saturday.
The Chieftains split with South Haven, but were swept by River Valley, Schoolcraft and Paw Paw.
Danielle Taylor led the Chieftains in serving, while Alyssa Greenwood led the team in kills.
Marquira Smith had three solo blocks for Dowagiac.
The Chieftains are back in action on Thursday against Plainwell .
