Spikers headed to Bangor

The Dowagiac freshmen and junior varsity volleyball teams will compete in the Bangor Invitational on Saturday.
The Chieftain freshmen team will compete in Pool B along with Paw Paw, Schoolcraft, South Haven and River Valley.
Host Bangor will compete in Pool A with Fennville, Bridgman, New Buffalo and Watervliet.
Pool play will consist of two games of rally scoring to 21, with a cap at 21.
In the opening match of pool play at 9 a.m., Dowagiac will take on River Valley. The Chieftains will also play at 10:30 a.m. against Schoolcraft. Dowagiac will face Paw Paw 12:45 p.m. Dowagiac will wrap up pool play at 3 p.m. against South Haven.
The semifinals, which will consist of winners of the two pools taking on the runners-up from the opposite pool, will be played at 4:30 p.m.
The finals are scheduled to begin at 5:15 p.m.
The format in the playoff round will be a best of three games with rally scoring to 21. If a third game is necessary, it will be rally scoring to 15 with a cap at 17. There will be no cap in the championship match.
Admission is $4 for the entire day. Concessions will be available.
Portage Northern tourney
The scores do not reflect how well the Dowagiac freshmen volleyball team played at the Portage Northern Invitational on Saturday.
The Chieftains won just one game and dropped eight against Lakeshore, Vicksburg, Coloma and Allegan.
"Overall, we played well," Dowagiac coach Emily Frontczak said. "The scores may not reflect it, but we played very well. We are definitely improving."
Jo Pickar and Danielle Taylor led Dowagiac in aces and service points. Alyssa Greenwood and Marquira Smith led the team in kills.
Dowagiac is back in action on Thursday as they host Comstock in a Wolverine Conference match. Play is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
JV tournament
Competing in the junior varsity portion of the tournament will be the Chieftains, Lady Vikings, Gobles, Kalamazoo Christian, Watervliet, Schoolcraft, Hartford and Covert.
Pool play will consist of two games of rally scoring to 25, with a cap at 25. Play is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
The format in the playoff round will be a best of three games with rally scoring to 21. If a third game is necessary, it will be rally scoring to 15 with a cap at 17. There will be no cap in the championship match.
Admission is $4 for the entire day. Concessions will be available.
