DECATUR – Van Buren District Library Director David Tate announced that two staff members are the district's 2006 Librarians of the Year.
Kay McAdam, of Cassopolis and Janet Abshagen of Decatur received the award for their achievements during the past year.
"Kay has done a fantastic job for us as the Antwerp Sunshine Branch librarian," Tate said "She has all the skills you need to manage a first-class branch library facility."
Tate credits McAdam for working closely with the Friends of the Antwerp Library in conducting a successful book sale, establishing a local history room and landscaping the library. He notes that the Antwerp Branch is the busiest facility in the library district.
Abshagen is recognized for her role as interlibrary loan clerk at Webster Memorial Library in Decatur.
"Janet has taken a fairly well organized inter-loan system and streamlined it even further," Tate said. "Thanks to her organizational skills, we provide quick and efficient inter-loan service to our patrons, Woodlands Library Cooperative and other Michigan libraries."
During the first 11 months of the year, Abshagen supervised inter-loan traffic that included more than 29,000 items within the district and more than 3,000 items to the library cooperative. She also serves as president of Friends of the Van Buren District Library.
Van Buren District Library is headquartered in Decatur with branches in Bangor, Bloomingdale, Covert, Gobles, Lawrence and Mattawan.
