Dowagiac freshmen top Vicksburg

The Dowagiac freshmen basketball team defeated visiting Vicksburg Tuesday night, 38-26.
The win was the second of the season over the Lady Bulldogs.The Chieftains junior varsity squad dropped a 36-22 decision at the hands of Vicksburg.

Despite playing without one of its top scorers, Britnee Allerton, Dowagiac was able to complete the sweep of a two-game series with the Lady Bulldogs.
Allerton has been moved up to the varsity squad.
Kalen Nickens led the Chieftains with 21 points. Marcie Ennesser added nine points, while Cassandra Stone finished with six points.
According to coach Bob Sovine, Kelsey Foote rebounded the ball well for the Chieftains, while Leana Allen and Cierra Mattix were singled out for their defensive efforts.

The Chieftain JV was also without one of their starters as Tasia Diaz has been moved up to the varsity squad.
Stephanie Grabemeyer led Dowagiac with eight points. Kayleigh Hutchinson and Brittany Gnatz scored five and four points respectively.
"I was extremely pleased with our guard play," Dowagiac coach Brad Yauchstetter said. "After losing Tasia Diaz, our starting point guard to the varsity, our girls stepped up and had a good game. Stephanie Grabemeyer played a great defensive game and contributed eight points on offense."
The freshmen and junior varsity teams are back in action on Thursday when they play host to Paw Paw.
The freshmen game is slated to begin at 4:15 p.m., while the JV game is scheduled to start at 5:45 p.m.
