Equestrian team finishes sixth

BERRIEN SPRINGS – The Dowagiac Equestrian Team showed this weekend in the rain and mud at the Michigan Interscholastic Horsemanship Association district meet on Saturday and Sunday.
The event was held at the Berrien Country Youth Fair grounds.
Dowagiac finished sixth. Lakeshore won the B Division with South Haven, Berrien Springs, Mattawan and River Valley rounding out the top five placers.
Dowagiac, Bangor and Agape were sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.
On Saturday, the team finished with 50 points. Kayla Dewey was the top rider with 22 points.
Dewey finished fourth in Western Fitting and Showing, third in Hunt Seat Fitting and Showing, fourth in Hunt Seat Equitation and third in Reining.
Karlee Rife finished with 20 points by placing second in Cloverleaf Race with a time of 19.18 and first in Keyhole with a time of 7.797. With the help of Elisabeth Gokey, she placed fourth in Two-Person Relay.
Gokey earned five points by placing eighth in Cloverleaf Race with a time of 21.59 and fifth in Keyhole with a time of 10.514.
Sara Ausra earned three points with a sixth place finish in Saddle Seat Fitting and Showing.
On Sunday, Dowagiac finished with 75 points.
Rife earned high-point honors with 33 points. She was fourth in Reining, first in Keyhole (7.432 seconds) and second in Two-Person Relay with Gokey (14.085).
Dewey finished with 19 points as she was sixth in Western Fitting and Showing, third in Hunt Seat Fitting and Showing, sixth in Hunt Seat Equitation, fifth in Reining and seventh in Trail.
Gokey contributed 16 points by finishing fourth in Hunt Seat Equitation, fifth in Flag Race, sixth in Cloverleaf Race and fifth in Keyhole. Gokey also earned honorable mention in her Hunt Seat Bareback class.
Ausra finished with eight points as she was fifth in both Saddle Seat Fitting and Showing and Saddle Seat Equitation.
The team finished with a total of 174 points for all three meets.
The team is coached by Erin Ausra and Brittany McCormick.
