Visiting Vicksburg swept the doubles flights Wednesday afternoon on its way to a 5-3 Wolverine Conference victory over the Dowagiac varsity tennis team.
Dowagiac won three out of four singles flights and were extremely competitive against the Lady Bulldogs at Dowagiac Middle School.
"Vicksburg is a very good team," Dowagiac coach Chuck Rubino said. "We had seen them twice between today and they dominated up in doubles matches. Today our doubles teams really competed. I was really happy with our effort."
Dowagiac picked up its victories at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles.
Taylor Townsend improved to 2-1 on the year against Allison Oswalt with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles.
Ashley Smith defeated Kati Downs at No. 2 singles, 6-0 and 6-3, while at No. 4 singles, Shelly Urbanski blanked Lyndsay Hammond 6-0 and 6-0.
"In the doubles matches we had a chance to force a couple of matches into a third set, but just came up a little short," Rubino said. "Our goal is to get better every time we step on the court."
Dowagiac will now prepare to face Wolverine Conference favorite Allegan on Monday. The Chieftains will face the host Lady Tigers at 4:30 p.m.
Dowagiac will then host Comstock on Wednesday.
