Councilman seeks county office

NILES - A Niles City Council member is after a position on the county level.
Niles resident Robert Durm announced he is seeking the office of County Commissioner for the 13th District of Berrien County. Durm, currently serving as an elected official for the second ward on the Niles City Council, filed the appropriate documents with the county clerk to formalize his candidacy Tuesday, May 16.
Durm, 41, is married with four children. He is employed by Schraders Steel Fabricating, Inc. in Niles, where he works as a project engineer. He is a graduate of Niles Community Schools and the University of Notre Dame, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in government in 1987.
He is a life-long resident of Niles and has been working as an elected official on the Niles City Council for 10 years.
Durm said he has been actively involved in the Niles community through his involvement in local government, volunteer boards and coaching youth sports.
Durm said he hopes to help continue making Berrien County an attractive area for new businesses, families and tourists.
Durm described his strengths as listening and communicating. He said he believes those are the keys to being a successful elected official.
By filing his documentation, Durm has placed himself on the Tuesday, Aug. 8 primary ballot as a Republican candidate for the open 13th District seat.
