EAST LANSING - In an effort to increase traffic safety during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the Michigan State Police announced Monday it will dedicate patrols to traffic enforcement starting at 6 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, Nov. 23.
Troopers will be participating in the nationwide traffic safety initiative, Operation CARE (Combined Accident Reduction Effort), focusing on traffic safety violations such as speed, impaired driving and safety belts.
State police also encourage county and local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to join efforts to make Michigan a safer place to travel.
The official Thanksgiving holiday weekend begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23, and runs through midnight Sunday, Nov. 27.
Last year, there were 10 fatal traffic crashes resulting in 10 deaths over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
Of the 10 fatal traffic crashes, alcohol was a factor in two of the crashes.
Three victims were not wearing safety belts.
