WATERVLIET - It was evident from the first quarter that Brandywine was going to have problems during Monday evening's Class C district game against River Valley.
Brandywine dug a big hole and was never quite able to get out, which resulted in a 55-40 loss to the Mustangs, ending the Lady Cats' season.
River Valley jumped to an early 13-9 lead after the first quarter of play and the Bobcats would only see that lead extend for the Mustangs in the second.
Kari Konopka, Mallory Barber and Ashley Casey were the only Brandywine players to score in the quarter, while River Valley added 19 additional points to the scoreboard, bringing the halftime score to 32-13.
Missed shots, missed rebounds and 18 turnovers in the first half alone made Brandywine look like a team that most weren't used to seeing.
The third period didn't start out any better as the Mustangs pounded in two baskets in the first 40 seconds of the game.
Katie Smallwood added the first point for the Lady Cats at the 7:08 mark when she went 1-for-2 on the line and Kari Konopka added two points as well. However, a technical foul on Brandywine head coach Dave Roeder gave River Valley two successful free throws to bring the score to 38-16.
Brandywine didn't let the foul bring them down and made a huge attempt to comeback later in the third. Kari Konopka, Kalie Newman, Smallwood and Casey all contributed for 16 points in the last four minutes of play to bring the third period score to 42-32.
Unfortunately, that was the closest the Lady Cats were able to get for the rest of the game.
Brooke Allen, Kelli Zache and Smallwood added a combined seven points in the fourth quarter and Newman fouled out with 2:53 left to play.
Kari Konopka lead the Lady Cats in scoring with 14 points and brought down six rebounds.
Smallwood contributed 11 points and Newman added five points and four assists.
Seniors on this year's squad are Kelli Zache, Newman, Connie Brant, Rachel Batman and Casey.
Brandywine ends its season with an 11-10 record.
