Eddies topple Sturgis

Edwardsburg avoided a four-game losing skid Thursday night at home against Sturgis with a 35-29 non-conference victory.
It was a see-saw battle in the first quarter as Sturgis jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. The Eddies would eventually tie the game up and take the lead, but Sturgis battled back and took a one point lead at the end of the first quarter 12-10.
The Lady Eddies' Kristin Toney scored all of the Eddies points in the quarter with two baskets and two three-pointers.
Edwardsburg opened quarter number two with a bucket to square the contest up. The Lady Eddies held Sturgis scoreless in the second quarter and took a 16-12 lead at the break.
Sturgis took an early 20-18 lead in the third which would swell to 25-18. Sturgis' Sarah Thomasma scored eight third quarter points, but the Eddies' Julie Harness scored seven points to shrink the Trojans lead to 25-23 after three.
A fourth quarter shot-plus-foul three-point play by the Eddies' Lindsay Moellenberndt gave the lead back to Edwardsburg, 26-25, but Sturgis' Rachel Denison hit a clutch three pointer to gave Sturgis the lead back 28-26.
With two minutes remaining, the Eddies tied the contest up, and hit a series of free throws to give the hosts the home victory.
The Lady Eddies outscored Sturgis 12-4 in the fourth quarter.
Toney paced the Eddies with 13 points, Chrissy Breisch and Julie Harness each scored seven points.
Sarah Thomasma led Sturgis with 14 points.
The Lady Eddies junior varsity lost to Sturgis 42-9 in the game played earlier.
