Santa coming to town soon

NILES - Santa is set to visit downtown Niles on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Riverfront Amphitheater.
Monday evening the City of Niles approved a request from the Greater Flags Chamber of Commerce to waive the $25 application fee for the visitor in red.
In other business Monday the council:
approved the request from the Niles Main Street DDA to conduct the annual Downtown Safe Trick or Treat event from 4 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29.
Earlier, from 2 to 4 p.m. the annual Simplicity Pattern Company Halloween Costume Contest will be held at the Riverfront Amphitheater.
approved a request from the Niles-Philadelphia Church youth group, Rising Stars Pathfinders, to hold a fundraiser in the vacant lot at the corner of N. Front and Ferry streets from Oct. 28 through the 30th.
will allow the United Way banner to be installed over Main Street from about Sept. 11 through Dec. 11. The organization will also need to get approval from MDOT.
approved the purchase of one four-inch water meter for the new YMCA at a cost of $3,545 from ETNA Supply of Grand Rapids.
will contract with Peerless Midwest of Mishawaka, Ind. to make emergency repairs to Fort St. Well at a cost of $36,812.
accepted a bid from Bobcat of Michiana in Elkhart, Ind. to purchase a 5-way sidewalk snowplow for $31,381.
accepted a bid of $33,784 from Kalin Construction of Sodus, to replace the water main on vacated Pokagon Street.
approved the purchase of a Gestetner DSc460 copier for the City Hall from U.S. Business Systems of Berrien Springs at a cost of $17,473.
The council also approved an Industrial Facilities Exemption Certificate for 12 years for Innovative Products Unlimited, located in the industrial park.
A five-year airport ground lease was also approved for the Experimental Aircraft Association.
