Eighth grade cagers remain undefeated

The Dowagiac Middle School eighth grade basketball teams remained undefeated on Thursday with a pair of wins over Mattawan.
The Chieftain Orange team (5-0) posted an 18-14 win over Mattawan thanks to a last-second shot by Torie Lowe and some defense and rebounding by Marcie Ennesser.
Lowe put the Chieftains up by two and Ennesser provided the defense and rebounding to keep Mattawan from tying the score.
Kelsey Foote then put the game out of reach with a basket.
Lowe led all scorers with 13 points. Foote and Cassie Stone both finished with two points. Ennesser had one.
The eighth grade Black team used a 1-3-1 zone defense to romp past Mattawan 26-6.
Jasmine Chambliss led all scorers with 22 points. Joanna Pickar and Ali Hess also scored for the Chieftains.
Dowagiac is now 5-0 on the year.
Seventh grade
The seventh grade Orange and Black teams were defeated by Mattawan Thursday afternoon.
The Orange team dropped a heart-breaking 18-17 decision, while the Black team was edged 18-14.
Vicky Robinson led the Orange team with 10 points. Kaisha Martin added three points, while Heather Leonard and Kiele Belew each added two points.
The Black team was led offensively by Shateesha White who had 10 points. Heather Mathews finished with four points.
Dowagiac is back in action on Thursday Oct. 6 when it hosts Benton Harbor Fairplain.
Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
