CASSOPOLIS - Alan Northrop, a District 4 Cass County Commissioner and owner of Northrop Logging of 12891 Dutch Settlement Road, was recently contacted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to clear debris left from Hurricane Katrina.
Northrop and his two employees, Jeramy Anders and Chuck Heron, left Sunday morning with a log truck, a crane in the center and a pup trailer behind, a large dump truck, a pickup truck with a camper on the bed and a travel trailer.
Northrop said FEMA is calling loggers from Michigan basically because they have large trucks.
He said Michigan allows heavy, multi-axle trucks over the road with more weight per axle than other states.
Northrop says Anders and Heron will probably work down there two to three months. Northrop will be going back and forth.
"We don't know what we will be getting into," he said.
He added, his aunt who lives in Mississippi lost a $1 million house from the hurricane, "everything but her swimming pool." He said she is staying with her son in northern Mississippi."
After the workers leave Biloxi, they will head for New Orleans, according to their most recent information from FEMA.
