NILES - Never underestimate the power of youth.
The kindergarten, first and second grade students at Merritt Elementary School, were put up to the challenge of collecting funds for the Hurricane Katrina victims of the Gulf Coast and New Orleans.
Mary Burge who has four students at the school that came up with the idea of having the kids bring in a different domination of change each day, Monday through Thursday, and then on Friday the kids could bring in paper money and wear hats as a reward.
As part of the fundraiser the class which brings in the highest weight of donations and then the class which gathers the most donations will each be rewarded with a party.
The students also had a great time working on this fundraiser to help the hurricane victims.
