These two words in the Pledge of Allegiance have been declared unconstitutional by U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence Karlton. According to the judge, these words violate a child's right to be "free from coercive requirement to affirm God."
The judge, appointed by President Jimmy Carter, is ready to make sure the schools in his jurisdiction, in and around Sacramento, Calif., obey his ruling.
This isn't the first time this issue has come to court.
In 2002, proclaimed atheist Michael Newdow wanted to ban the pledge.
The Supreme Court took a weak stand then, guaranteeing the issue would resurface.
Immediately Thursday, religious and other groups began to shout their outrage on this attack on the Pledge of Allegiance.
Elliott's organization would like to see a "Pledge Protection Act."
This bill would "strip the federal courts of the ability to rule the Pledge unconstitutional," he said.
They plan on delivering 700,000 petitions supporting the Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S. Senate on Sept. 29.
It is time to end the debate once and for all.
Those in America who wish to keep our nation "under God" need to stand up and support organizations such as the Grassfire Alliance.
Let your voice be known. Too often a vocal minority ends up stepping on the majority's rights while fighting for their own.
