NILES - Come and take a "Journey into Art," which is the new art exhibit opening at the Niles District Library's, Eleanor and Mowitt Drew Gallery.
The exhibit will feature paintings and drawings from Patricia M. Rose of Niles and crocheted creations by Stephen Panti.
The show will open tomorrow and run through Oct. 22.
Rose's work will let viewers delve into the world of portraits and landscapes which she creates using pastels or paint.
Panti's work features twine, pieces of material and starch which he works into pieces of art. His crocheting is done freehand using mental calculations. He doesn't follow a pattern and was self taught by watching and imitation.
Patricia Rose, her husband and their two children have lived in Niles for the past 27 years.
Her parents were both artists and at the age of 13, Rose received her first set of oil paints, which were a gift from her mother.
When she was younger Rose was exposed to religious art at church and in her families illustrated Bible and she feels that has shaped the way she looks at art and the way she paints.
As a child, Rose would walk down to the river and fill buckets with clay, and then dry it and sift it in order to mold it into small objects.
Stephen Panti, is 43, and lives in Larteh-Akuapem, the Eastern Region of Ghana.
He was born in Papease-Kwawui and remained there until the end of third. From there he moved to live with his grandmother, the late Madam Emma Acheamopomaa, in 1974.
He lived there there until the completion of his elementary education, which was the 10th grade, in 1982.
During his stay with his grandmother Panti learned the art of crocheting. He went on to learn different trades as a young adult such as mechanics, tie and dye and batik. Panti is now known as a professional photographer. He does art as a part-time leisure job, which also earns him income.
On Thursday, Sept. 22, at 6:30 p.m., Rose will be presenting a gallery talk entitled "Being an Artist is Fun," where children in preschool to early elementary can create pastel drawings.
In October, Panti will be giving his own gallery talk and demonstrate and discuss his work.
Both of the artists lectures will take place in the libraries rotunda.
The Eleanor and Mowitt Drew Gallery is located in the Niles District Library's Rotunda. Exhibits can be viewed during regular library hours, Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday – Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
