BERRIEN SPRINGS - Each summer for one week in August the grounds of the Berrien County Youth Fair (BCYF) come alive as one of the largest youth fairs takes place.
Each fall and spring youth from all corners of Berrien County get their animals and begin working with them in preparation for that year's fair.
Roth has been involved with 4-H and participating in the fair since he was just a 6-year-old and loves being able to participate in the fair each year.
At this year's BCYF, Roth won reserve grand champion market pair lambs, as well as a hog showmanship challenge trophy in the intermediate division, named after Brandywine High School teacher Connie Huey.
Roth won this trophy for the third year in a row which means he gets to keep it, unlike a traveling trophy which is given back each year. Throughout the year Roth also travels to open shows where he competes with his sheep.
Coulston placed third in this year's intermediate division for showmanship with her sheep.
Both Roth and Coulston said one of their favorite parts of the fair is showing your animals and receiving an award for your hard work.
This is Calvin's fourth year participating in the fair, where he shows dairy cows and hogs. Last year he received two showmanship trophies with his dairy cow Nadia and is looking to so the same this year when he competes on Thursday.
Calvin is the son of Missy Villwock of Niles.
The 2005 Berrien County Youth Fair runs through Saturday, Aug. 20, in Berrien Springs.
