NILES - With only one day of practice so far this season, Buchanan varsity golf coach Jim Brohman isn't too sure what to expect from his Bucks as they head to their first match on Tuesday in Centreville.
Which is exactly what his golfers are going to have to do. Brohman's philosphy is to take the top six kids, whether it be all of his five seniors and a junior, or six freshmen.
Andrew Colip and Matt Adams, both seniors and retunring from last year's team, will be the two top golfers for the Bucks this year and sophomore Adam Houin will fill out the top three.
Brohoman admitted that the other three spots are wide open.
Other golfers are seniors Jeremy Bacham, Brian Lembke and DJ Groshans, juniors Matt Stover, Woody Woodrick, Justin Brown and John Blayock and freshmen Wesley Weaver, Zach Hughes, Richard Belvins, Jeff Jeru, Ryan Hollingshead, Colin Davis and Rob Bar.
The Bucks will face Cassopolis on Sept. 6 for their first conference match and Brohman feels very confident that his team will be 'in the mix' this year with the top teams in the LAC.
Winning conference is Buchanan's main goal this year, but Brohman's real goal for his team is to make it through districts, something never before seen in the LAC.
Districts will be played at Hampshire Country Club, with the top six teams and individuals advancing to regional play.
Layher finished second in the conference last year and was the golfer that most would look to when the team was in a bind, but this year it will be a team effort, not an indivdual one and Brohman is confident that his team has what it takes to shine.
The Bucks open their season Tuesday when they travel to Centreville. On Wednesday, the team will compete in the Berrien Springs Invitational , followed by a JV match on Thursday.
