ALLENDALE - A pilot program that teaches study skills to Grand Valley State University freshmen football players may be expanded to all freshmen athletes soon.
Freshmen Athlete Scholastic Training (FAST) is a cooperative effort between the Athletic and English departments.
Wendy Hedrick, visiting professor of English, approached Damon Arnold, director of Athletic Advising, with the idea in the spring.
After enthusiastic approval from football coach Chuck Martin and Athletic Director Tim Selgo, Hedrick and Arnold began teaching study skills and time management skills to 47 freshmen football players.
The group meets for an hour each day during football camp. Hedrick said they will meet again in November, to help prepare student athletes for exams.
Arnold said he hopes to eventually offer the class for credit to student athletes.
