NILES - Niles teens are getting a taste of what it's like to be a crime scene investigator.
Trooper Rob Herbstreith of the Niles Michigan State Police Post, along with the help of State Police Detective Fabian Suarez, Niles City Police Officer Kevin Kosten and a few guest speakers, are conducting a junior detective academy this week at the Niles Law Enforcement complex.
The academy is for high school students who have an interest in law enforcement and forensics.
Herbstreith added, "All of the 13 students in the class are here on a voluntary basis. They all have some sort of interest in the field of law enforcement or forensics and this academy gives them a chance to see what this kind of work is all about. Also being they are older kids we can go a bit more in depth with what we are talking about."
Throughout the week the students learn the ins and outs of both crime scene and homicide investigation.
They also learn what it takes to identify the cause of death at a fire, how detectives are briefed on a case, what has to be done when testifying in court.
Ashley Snyder said, "I wanted to come because I have a real interest in these kinds of things. I like to watch CSI and I wanted to get a taste of what those sort of things are like, to see if its something I would like to do in the future."
