Crash on US 12 injures 16-year-old driver

NILES - The Michigan State Police, Niles Post is investigating a two vehicle accident which resulted in serious injury to a teenage male driver. The accident occurred in Cass County's, Milton Township, at the intersection of US 12 and Gumwood Road Wednesday, July 13, at approximately 5:45 p.m.
A vehicle operated by a 16-year-old male subject from the Niles area attempted to cross US 12 from Gumwood Road, headed northbound.
Eyewitnesses at the scene advised that the driver's view was possibly obstructed by an unrelated vehicle turning southbound onto Gumwood Road from eastbound US 12. The driver entered the intersection after stopping at the posted stop sign, but before clearing it, his vehicle was struck in the driver's side by a second vehicle.
The second vehicle, a white van, driven by a 36-year-old Edwardsburg man had the clear right-a-way as it traveled eastbound on US 12.
The 16-year-old-driver was transported to South Bend Memorial due to his injuries. A hospital spokeswomen advised that the driver is in critical condition at this point. It appeared the driver was wearing his safety belt.
The 36-year-old driver sustained minor injuries and sought his own medical care. He was also wearing his safety belt.
Troopers were assisted by the Niles Township Fire Department, with volunteers, SMCAS Ambulance Services and Advanced Accident Investigators from the Niles State Police Post and Cass County Sheriff's Department.
