Ultralight runs out of fuel in Calvin

CASSOPOLIS - Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. of the Cass County Sheriff's Office reports that on Saturday, July 2, at approximately 8:45 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the 16000 block of Mt. Zion Street in Calvin Township for an accident involving an ultralight aircraft.
James Loomis, 57, of Portage, was piloting an ultralight aircraft when it apparently ran out of fuel.
Loomis attempted to fly the ultralight back to the grass airstrip that he had taken off from when he lost altitude and struck an embankment just short of the airstrip.
Loomis was transported to Elkhart, Ind., General Hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained in the crash.
Assisting at the scene were Cass Ambulance Service and Penn Township Fire Department.
The crash remains under investigation.
