NILES - At 4:23 a.m. this morning the Niles Police Department central dispatch center received a call of a single car injury crash on Redfield Road, west of Brush Road in Milton Township, in Cass County.
Troopers from the Niles Michigan State Police Post responded to the scene and observed a 1997 Ford Ranger resting against a tree. They located the driver and sole occupant still behind the wheel.
The 57 year-old male was not breathing and had no pulse. Troopers were able to extricate the driver from the vehicle and started CPR. SMCAS Ambulance Service responded to the scene where they took over medical treatment.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
It appears, through initial investigations, the driver fell asleep at the wheel and left the roadway striking the tree according to the Michigan State Police.
It also appears the driver was not wearing his seatbelt and alcohol was not a factor. The crash remains under investigation.
The Michigan State Police were assisted at the scene by the Cass County Sheriffs Department, SMCAS Ambulance Service and Edwardsburg/Ontwa Township Fire Department.
