NILES - So, how does it feel to be the only member of your team to make it to the state finals?
Smith recently captured the Division 3 pole vault regional championship at Constantine High School when she cleared 8-feet-3 to earn her a spot on the list of state finalists.
This Saturday, she will travel to Comstock Stadium to compete with some of the best high school track members in hopes of capturing a state win.
Smith is only in her first year as a pole vaulter for the Bobcats, but with the success she has had already, she is sure to have a bright future.
Smith admits she continues to practice everyday with the help of her coach, Terry Borr and Kyle Perry, who is a pole vaulter for the boy's track team.
It has only been two years since the Bobcats have sent any track members to the state finals. In 2003, Lacey Hutchings and Nikki Smith both made it to the championships. Hutchings was a three time qualifier in the pole vault for Brandywine. So the Bobcats will be rooting for Smith to bring back a state trophy.
