EDWARDSBURG-Edwardsburg High School's top graduating seniors were recognized for their last time before graduation during a meeting of the Edwardsburg School Board of Education last Wednesday night. Others recognized were an all academic team, seventh-grade students who won in a math meet and the school nurse.
Presented with certificates of achievement by high school Principal David Zech were co-valedictorians Courtney Moyer and Jaclyn O'Connor, each with a 4.0 grade-point average. Tena Schildhouse was recognized as class salutatorian with a grade-point average of 3.992.
Top students in the class recognized were Sean Malone, Casandra Crennel, Shelley Roberts, Erik Griffing, Amanda-Grace Tafunai, Margaret Moyer and Linda Phillipson. They received from 3.94 to 3.987 grade-point averages.
Named to the Lakeland Conference All-Academic team were seniors Katherine Fahey, Corinne Fleming and Jaclyn O'Connor.
Middle school seventh-grade students who took first place in the Tri-County Math meet consisting of four different tests were Cameron Breisch, Nicholas Mortimer, Jalen Williams, Nicole Fleming and Alan Wagner. Edwardsburg finished second place overall of 22 schools in three counties, Zech said.
Director of Curriculum and Instructional Resources Debra Cripe recognized Brenda Breslin, district school nurse, for all she has done for the children in promoting educational health and well being of the students. She also works in health curriculum development.
The board also accepted the resignation of David Carew, secondary vocal music instructor, to accept a position with Southwestern Michigan College.
The board also approved the curricula for Sexuality HIV/STD Prevention Education as reviewed by the Sex Education Advisory Committee and presented at two public hearings.
Adopted was the 2005-06 student handbook revisions after the Policy Sub-Committee Chairperson and school board President Birdella Holdread along with Trustees Dale Blunier and Michael Gorden met with building administrators to discuss and review the proposed handbook modifications. Holdread said there were minimal changed in the handbook, mostly to clean up language.
The Lewis Cass Intermediate School District budget was adopted for the 2005-06 school year and appointed Blunier as a voting delegate and Holdread as an alternate for the biennial election of the district to be held at 5 p.m. June 6 at the school on Dailey Road.
Holdread and Vice President Douglas Stickney will attend the Michigan Association of School Boards from July 14 to 17 at Traverse City.
Superintendent Sherman Ostrander reported that the district will get $6,700 per pupil in state aid. He said he was optimistic that it appears the school will balance the 2005-06 budget of its $900,000 deficit. "Hopefully, we will not have to dip into the fund revenue," he said.
The board last month adopted the budget of $16,649,055 in revenues, $17,507,580 in expenses with a deficit of $858,525.
