Congratulations to the Niles boys' track team, which broke the 20-year winless drought Friday evening at the Michigan High School Athletic Association regional meet at Allegan High School.
The Vikings defeated 16 other schools at the annual meet to advance to this weekend's Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association (MITCA) team state finals at Corunna High School.
Niles will compete for the MHSAA state championship Saturday, June 4 at Caledonia High School near Grand Rapids.
What an accomplishment for the team and the high school. It's hard to
believe its been that long for the team, especially with the amount of talented high school athletes that Niles has had, presently and in the past.
Niles won three out of four relays and had a total team score of 78 points. A total of 10 athletes earned regional championships and will advance to the state finals.
The Vikings were favored to win, but knew it was going to be a challenge heading into the meet. Niles rose to the challenge and fulfilled its destiny.
While Niles cleared its first goal of winning the regional title, it will
have to work even harder if it wants to accomplish the second goal of
winning the team state championship this weekend.
The Vikings have had individual state champions in the past, but no team
has won a state title in the modern era. The track and field team would like to change that.
The Vikings need all the support they can get in over the next two weekends, so students, parents and anyone else who would like to show their support are encouraged to as the Vikings hope to win that elusive state title, which Niles hasn't seen in over four decades.
It's well overdue, so let's hope for the best. Go Vikings!
