Dowagiac falls to No. 9 St. Joseph twice

The Dowagiac varsity baseball team didn't fare well on Tuesday against ranked St. Joseph in its Big 16 Conference West Division doubleheader.
The No. 9 rated Bears won 13-1 and 13-3. Both games lasted just six innings.
Jesse Cox (1-3) took the loss in the opening game for the Chieftains as he worked five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with two strike outs and three walks.
Jake Cox and Jordan Huey also pitched for the Chieftains.
Dowagiac finished with just one hit off of winning pitcher Derek Bross, who struck out one and did not walk a batter.
Jamie Simpson singled for the Chieftains' lone hit.
John Witt homered, while Elliott Heiney and Deke Knuth both doubled for the Bears.
In the second game Scott Wilkinson (1-2) took the loss for the Chieftains as he worked five innings, allowing nine runs on 10 hits with three strike outs and a walk.
Simpson worked an inning for the Chieftains.
Jared Knuth picked up the win for the Bears as he allowed three runs on eight hits with six strike outs and four walks.
David Stuppy went 3-for-4 for the Chieftains, who also got two hits and three RBIs from Simpson. Rob Duszynski was 2-for-2.
Dowagiac returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Berrien Springs, another ranked team, in a non-conference doubleheader scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
