NILES - The Niles varsity softball team suffered a 5-2 loss to visiting South Bend Washington on a chilly Monday evening.
Niles was very close to a win, a little too close, and didn't realize it until the game came to an end.
After being tied at one in the first and second innings, Washington got three runs in the top of the third to put it up 4-1. Niles wasn't able to pull in another run until the bottom of the fifth, but one run wasn't going to be enough.
Another run in the top of the seventh for Washington gave it a three point lead and the 5-2 win.
Julie Kater suffered the pitching loss and went 2-for-3 at bat. Stephanie Schrader and Shelley Aurand both went 1-for-3.
The Vikes, now 4-9 overall, will host Coldwater tonight at Vella Park. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
