Walking into Dowagiac Union High School Wednesday night during halftime of the varsity soccer match I realized that the school year is rapidly coming to a close.
How did I know this? The band was having its annual awards program.
It hadn't really dawned on me that we are just about to go into the final full month of athletic competition.
May is coming on Sunday which means that things are really going to start heating up as conference and division titles are decided and teams begin preparation for the post season.
The weather may not have been the greatest in April, but we did manage to have some outstanding days and we have managed to get most of games, matches and meets in without incident.
That means as of right now there are not very many events that have needed to be rescheduled.
That is a blessing when you consider that May doesn't have that many open dates to work with.
I am sure that athletic directors throughout southwestern lower Michigan have been crossing their fingers that the rain and snow continue to hold off.
With the start of May also comes the realization that it is time for summer baseball and softball to get started.
The Dowagiac Youth Soccer League has been playing for a few weeks now, although the snow canceled competition this past weekend.
If you haven't been out to a soccer match yet I encourage you to get out there and take a look.
Some of these youngsters are the future of our high school programs.
On Monday Dowagiac Little League baseball and softball will open up play at Russom Field.
The volunteers have been working extremely hard to get the fields ready for this season and I am know they have done another outstanding job.
Leagues like the soccer, baseball and softball cannot function without volunteers.
I want to take this time to thank each and every one of them for helping give our youth a place to play and a place to grow.
Youth sports is a big part of small communities such as ours.
So next week, or in the weeks following, get out to Russom Field and take a look at what is going on.
Like soccer, these players are the future of our high school programs.
