During the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, 2004, veterans and their families in Cass County received $9.538 million from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Benefits in the form of disability compensation, pension, education, insurance and indemnities were paid directly to many of the county's 5,216 veterans.
Of the $9.538 million total, Cass County veterans and their families received $3.951 million in compensation and pension benefits, $342,000 for benefits and training for disabled veterans and $321,000 for insurance and indemnities.
Keith J. Thompson, director of the VA regional office in Detroit, the office that administers benefit payments for Michigan, said, "This influx of money into the Cass County economy was a significant portion of the more than $1 billion VA expended to serve the 836,950 veterans living throughout the State of Michigan."
Thompson reminds any Cass County veteran, "If you believe your service-connected condition has gotten worse or you simply have a question about your VA benefits, be sure to get in contact with the VA Regional Office."
You may do this by calling the Cass County veterans representative (Frederick W. Leet, 120 N. Broadway, Suite 215, Cassopolis) or by calling VA direct on its toll-free telephone number, 1-800-827-1000.
