Dowagiac Union High School teachers surprised Daily News Managing Editor John Eby after school Tuesday with a LINKS plaque in appreciation of his "outstanding contribution to the students and staff."
The periodic LINKS Award (Local Individuals Nurturing Kids and Schools) was designed by the DUHS staff to recognize local individuals and businesses for meritorious service benefiting students and teachers.
The fourth such plaque was given in 2003 in the DUHS media center to Patrick and Patricia Murphy of Murphy's Flowers.
The first LINKS Awards were presented May 21, 2002, to Kathy McDonald, former owner of Movies Movies, and Pat Tushla, for volunteer work in the DUHS media center.
Signal Travel was honored Oct. 22, 2002.
DUHS English teacher and Chieftain Monitor student newspaper adviser Teri Frantz made the presentation, reading from an editorial in the June 5, 1975, Bows and Arrows student newspaper Eby edited.
Text accompanying senior pictures and photos of the class as seventh graders stated, "Experience teaches us that for every problem there is a solution, if only we search for it. And often the keys which are needed to overcome a problem are the basic teachings of our youth.
