Court worker may have died in fire

CASSOPOLIS - Cass County Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. reports his office is investigating a house fire that took the life of a subject.
The fire took place at 17300 Chain Lake St. in Calvin Township.
A passerby reported the fire to 911 at approximately 5:09 a.m. Tuesday.
Penn Township Fire Department was dispatched and received assistance from Cassopolis Fire Department. Cassopolis Ambulance also assisted at the scene.
Initial investigation shows the fire started in the front of the residence.
When fire and sheriff personnel first arrived on the scene, the house was fully engulfed.
After the fire was put out, fire personnel discovered a deceased subject in the rear bedroom of the residence, believed to be Mitchell L.R. Walker, 54, a casework supervisor with the St. Joseph County Juvenile Court in Centreville. Identification of the subject is pending an autopsy to be performed in Grand Rapids.
Sheriff's deputies were assisted at the scene by the Michigan State Police Fire Marshal.
The incident remains under investigation.
