Dowagiac JV spikers play well at St. Joe

ST. JOSEPH - The Dowagiac freshmen and junior varsity volleyball teams both played well Monday night at the St. Joseph Quad.
The freshmen team defeated St. Joseph, but lost to Three Rivers and South Haven.
The Chieftain JV lost to St. Joseph, but then rallied to defeat the Lady Wildcats and the Lady Rams.
Freshmen volleyball
The Chieftains knocked off St. Joseph, 26-24 and 25-21, in the opening round of the quad tournament.
Kayla Saviano led the team with eight kills, while Jessica Pence added two kills.
Lori Key finished with eight assists. Stephanie Barnas and Kassandra Leitz both had three aces. Alyson Wheeler and Saviano finished with two aces.
Leitz also had 13 digs.
Against Three Rivers, Dowagiac lost 20-25 and 23-25.
Key had six assists, Barnas had five aces and eight digs. Leitz had 10 digs, Kathleen Lindt had seven digs and three kills, Saviano had eight kills and Katelyn Ernzen had eight digs.
In the South Haven match, Dowagiac was defeated 12-25, 25-19 and 15-17.
Ernzen and Saviano both had four kills, Barnas had three kills, three aces and five assists, Lindsey Truitt had 10 digs, Saviano had 10 digs and Leitz had 12 digs.
On Saturday, Dowagiac finished third at the Bangor Invitational.
The Chieftains (7-11-2) defeated River Valley, 21-14 and 21-19; defeated Schoolcraft, 21-17 and 21-17; split with Paw Paw, 11-21 and 21-20; and lost to South Haven, 15-21 and 18-21; in pool play.
Dowagiac finished first in its pool and faced Fennville in the semifinals, losing 19-21 and 15-21.
Against River Valley, Katy Lindt led the team with four kills, while Saviano and Key both finished with three kills. Key also had 10 assists. Saviano and Leitz each finished with three aces. Barnas had six digs and Leitz five digs.
In the Schoolcraft match, Saviano had a team-high four kills. Key had four assists, while Leitz had three assists. Leitz and Barnas finished with two aces each. Leitz also had six digs and Barnas four.
Against Paw Paw, Saviano and Lindt each had three kills. Key had six assists. Lindt and Leitz had five and four digs respectely. Saviano finished with three solo blocks.
In the South Haven match, Barnas and Lindt each had two kills. Barnas also had four assists and three aces. Leitz and Saviano each had five digs.
Against Fennville, Barnas, Saviano and Wheeler all had one kill. Barnas also had three assists. Key finished with four aces, while Leitz had two aces and five digs. Saviano contributed five digs.
JV volleyball
Dowagiac lost to St. Joseph to open the night, but then knocked off Three Rivers and South Haven.
The Chieftains fell to the Lady Bears, 299-19, 19-25 and 15-10.
Jill Wiesemes had 12 assists, while Amber Clark had eight digs and Katy Stuppy six digs.
Dowagiac also got four aces from Allison Frontczak and seven kills from Calie Daniels.
Against Three Rivers, Dowagiac won 25-16 and 25-19.
Frontczak had four kills, Wiesemes nine assists, Stuppy nine digs and Clark five digs.
Frontczak also had three aces.
Against South Haven, Dowaiac won 25-16, 18-25 and 15-7.
Wiesemes had 10 assists, Daniels had four kills, Stuppy had five digs and Clark had five digs, three kills and three aces.
Stuppy also had three aces.
Dowagiac finished third in the Martin Invitational on Saturday.
The Chieftains were second in their pool after sweeping Hopkins (21-18 and 21-14), losing two to Tri-Unity Christian (23-25 and 14-21) and splitting with Fennville (21-17 and 19-21).
Dowagiac advanced to face Schoolcraft, which was No. 1 in its pool.
The Chieftains were defeated by the Lady Eagles, 25-23, 21-15 and 15-13.
Against Hopkins, Clark and Frontczak each had three kills and three aces.
Wiesemes finished with nine assists.
Clark also had 13 digs.
In the Fennville match, Daniels had five kills, Wiesemes had 10 assists and Clark had four digs.
Against Tri-Unity, Daniels had seven kills, Frontczak had three aces, Clark and Lindt had five digs and Wiesemes had two assists.
Against Schoolcraft, Front-czak had four kills, Wiesemes had 10 assists and Stuppy had seven aces and seven digs.
Dowagiac returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Lakeshore.
