Dowagiac freshmen get by Harper Creek

The Dowagiac freshmen football team had to play four solid quarters Thursday night to remain undefeated.
For the first time this season the Chieftains (6-0) played in a game that was still in doubt heading into the final quarter.
But the Chieftains showed heart and character according to coach Matt Alward in their 35-26 road victory.
Dowagiac led 27-20 at the intermission and played even football in the second half with the Beavers.
Kyle Prak scored three touchdowns and a two-point conversion. One of his touchdowns was a pass from Jake Cox.
Jamie Simpson scored twice, one of which was a kickoff return. He also added an extra point kick and recovered a fumble.
Matt Klees scored a two-point conversion.
Defensively Staley recovered an onside kick.
The Dowagiac junior varsity football team tasted defeat for the first time in 2004.
Host Battle Creek Harper Creek scored a 21-8 victory over the Chieftains, who are now 5-1 on the season.
David Sayre scored the lone touchdown for the Chieftains. He rushed for 15 yards on the night.
Jake Shelton led the team with 42 yards rushing, while Donte Young added 34 yards.
Defensively Kyle Bailey led Dowagiac with eight tackles.
Mike Kasper and Matt Dodson finished with six and four tackles respectively.
Dowagiac returns to action on Thursday when it hosts St. Joseph. the freshman game is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. with the junior varsity game at 6:30.
