The Niles varsity volleyball team gave Class B No. 4-ranked St. Joseph a run for its money in the first game of Wednesday's Big 16 Conference West Division match, but then succumbed to the Bears.
St. Joseph held off Niles for a 15-10 win in the first game and then cruised to wins of 15-4 and 15-2 for the sweep.
The loss drops Niles to 16-15-11 overall and 1-3 in the West Division.
Sarah Dreher and Rachael Every each had four kills for the Vikings while Melissa Olsen and Ashley Spriggs each had two. Amber Peter added one kill.
Sandy Molnar had 10 assists and four digs. Dreher led the team with five digs while Peters added four digs.
Every had a team-high two blocks while Olsen and Spriggs each had one block.
Niles hosts River Valley in a non-conference match Monday evening.
