NILES -- Buchanan High School senior Ashlee Layher and Niles High School junior Matt Poehlman are the Niles Daily Star Athletes of the Week for Dec. 15-20.
Layher is a member of the Buchanan varsity volleyball team which lost a pair of dual matches last week. In a 21-23, 21-9, 21-19, 21-15 loss to Dowagiac Monday night, Layher led the Bucks with 14 kills.
She then had seven kills, eight digs, three blocks and five aces in a 15-2, 2-15, 15-11, 15-11 loss at Berrien Springs on Wednesday.
Poehlman is a 103-pound wrestler on the Niles varsity wrestling team which lost a Big 16 West Division match and finished second at the Eau Claire Invitational last week. In the match with Lakeshore on Thursday, a 37-31 loss, Poehlman beat Kyle Hammermeister 7-4.
At the Eau Claire Invitational on Saturday, Poehlman beat Hesperia's Kevin Rubia 6-0 to claim the 103-pound championship.
