Niles Community Schools is welcoming 32 new teachers and counselors to the district this year. This continues a series of profiles introducing new teachers to the Niles community.
How many years of teaching experience do you have?
I am a school counselor and I have two years of experience.
Where do you come from and where have you taught in the past?
I grew up in Niles. I spent the last year at Boone Grave High School in Valparaiso, Ind., and prior to that I was at Northwood High School in Nappanee.
Where did you get your teachers' education?
My counselling degree was completed at Indiana University, South Bend, Ind. I don't have a teaching degree. My undergraduate degree in communication was completed at St. Mary' College.
What will you teach at Niles Community Schools?
I will be the career counselor at the high school and at Ring Lardner Middle School.
Why did you choose to teach in this school district?
I was excited about the opportunity to return to my hometown.
Do you have family in the area?
Yes. My brother, sister-in-laws, two nephews, three aunts and a grandmother and my mother works at Niles Community Schools as well.
What are you looking forward to as a new teacher in this school district?
I am excited to learn about all the changes that have been made since I was a student at Niles Schools.
What did you know about the are before you came here?
I am very familiar with the area having grown up here.
What do you know about the school district?
Niles is quite different than the Indiana districts with whom I have previously worked -- n size and in the make up of the student body.
How did you become interested in teaching?
After graduating from college I spent five years working in college admission where I had the opportunity to work with high school students and their families from all over the country. That was when I decided to get my degree in school counselling.
What is your family background?
I am single and have no children, but I do have family in the area.
What are some of your hobbies?
I love to read and travel.
