Miss Cass Co. at SMC

Five young women will compete for the title of Miss Cass/St. Joseph County 2004 at a scholarship pageant Saturday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m. at Southwestern Michigan College's Dale A. Lyons Building. Doors open at 6:45.
Tickets cost $12 at the door, or $5 for children ages 5 to 12.
There will be a total of $2,100 in scholarships awarded, including $1,000 for the new representative to the June 2004 Miss Michigan pageant, $500 for first runner-up and $200 for each non-finalist.
Executive Director Philip Hurlbutt's 10 years of service will also be celebrated at the program.
Three former representatives, Kim Leep Kok, Melissa Prestine and Stacie Barthel, will be entertaining throughout the program.
Judging in the competition counts 40 percent on presentation and community achievement in interview, 30 percent for artistic expression in talent, 10 percent for lifestyle and fitness in swimsuit, 10 percent for presence and poise in evening wear and 10 percent for overall composite score.
Lindsay Martin is a 2003 graduate of Constantine High School. She is enrolled at Grand Valley State University. Her talent is clarinet. Her platform is leadership.
Ashley Hess is a 2002 Dowagiac Union High School graduate. She attends Central Michigan University. Her talent is cheer dancing. Her platform is breast cancer awareness.
Jessica Cuthbert is a 2002 DUHS graduate. She attends Taylor University in Indiana. Her talent is jazz dance. Her platform is "Mental Health Matters: Removing the Stigma by Raising Awareness."
Haley Stevenson is a 2003 graduate of Edwardsburg High School. She is enrolled at Baker College. Her talent is vocal. Her platform is the 4-H youth program.
Erin Frayer is a 2003 graduate of Edwardsburg High School now enrolled at SMC. Her talent is vocal. Her platform is Child Abuse Prevention and Education.
