CASSOPOLIS -- Fire Chief WIlliam Fitzgerald presented the town's hero a plaque at Monday's Village Council meeting for her quick thinking in saving the lives of two young children.
Yvonne "Bonnie" Young saw a boy get out of a car, a fire inside at his feet. She quickly removed a two-year-old and a three-month-old baby just moments before the car became engulfed.
It was on April 25 of this year, when the children's mother ran into Family Dollar, where Young is the assistant manager, leaving her three youngsters outside.
Apparently, the Chief said, the boy was playing with the cigarette lighter and lit some paper in the front. When the fire started he got out of the vehicle.
Even the firefighter whose pager went off while he was next door eating at Bonnie and Clyde's couldn't have gotten to the two children in the back seat in time, Fitzgerald said. The vehicle was already engulfed.
