Washington, Bridges lead Bobcats

NILES -- Brandywine High School senior Nakisha Washington and sophomore Kory Bridges are the Niles Daily Star Athletes of the Week for April 21-26.
Washington is the starting shortstop on the Brandywine varsity softball team which won seven games last week. In a 12-0 win over Edwardsburg on Tuesday Washington had a triple to help the Bobcats sweep a doubleheader. Brandywine also swept a doubleheader from Bridgman Thursday afternoon. In a 10-0 win over the Bees Washington had a double and a triple. On Saturday the Bobcats won the Vicksburg Tournament with wins over Parchment and Vicksburg. In the 6-3 win over Vicksburg in the championship game Washington hit a single and a home run. She also hit three singles against Parchment. The Bobcats are now 17-1 and will travel to South Bend St. Joseph's today.
Bridges is a pitcher on the Brandywine varsity baseball team that won three games last week. The Bobcats earned their first victory of the season with a 3-2 decision at Edwardsburg on Tuesday. Bridges earned the pitching victory and also hit a double to help his own cause. On Saturday Brandywine won the Vicksburg Invitational with a 13-3 win over Kalamazoo Christian and a 6-2 win over Schoolcraft in the title game. Bridges went the distance on the mound against Kalamazoo Christian. He then relieved Zach Bennett in the championship game and earned his third win of the week. Bridges also hit a double against Kalamazoo Christian. The Brandywine baseball team is now 3-13 on the year and will host Coloma Tuesday.
