One dead in swimming accident on Long Lake

PORTER TOWNSHIP — An Indiana woman was killed in a swimming accident on Long Lake Tuesday, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
The office is currently investigating a swimming accident which occurred at 7:29 p.m. Tuesday on Long Lake in Porter Township, Cass County.
Seven individuals from Indiana were wakeboarding when the group stopped to take a break, according to initial investigations. One passenger, Janelle Miller, 19, of Shipshewana, Indiana, left the boat to swim. Shortly after Miller entered the water, passengers were unable to locate her in the water.
Passengers called 911 from the boat and dove into the water to locate Miller.
Cass County deputies, along with SEPSA Fire Authority and SEPSA ambulance arrived on the scene and began to search for Miller with no success. West Michigan Air Care was also called to the scene to aid in the search.
At 10:56 p.m., the Cass County Marine Division along with the Van Buren County Dive Team located Miller’s body.
The incident remains under investigation. Alcohol was not a factor and a life jacket was not used at the time, the sheriff’s department said.
