Brandywine wins fifth straight championship

For the fifth straight year and the 10th time in the past 13 years, the Brandywine Bobcats are BCS Athletic Conference tennis championships.

The fifth consecutive title was the toughest for the Bobcats as they edged Comstock 53-52 for the overall championship.

With the match deadlocked at 45-45, No. 4 singles player Madison Lucero defeated Comstock’s Jezrelle Abella 8-6 and 6-4 to give Brandywine the title.

“I was very concerned going into the tournament because we were down on starter and two other players were shook-up after being in a car accident in the vehicle they were in going to St. Joe,” said Brandywine coach Joe Marazita. “It was a total team effort where every point counted and we were able to put six flights in teh finals.

“To be short-handed and still come out on top shows how hard we fought and that we have depth in singles and doubles. It was a long day made longer due to court availability, but we persevered.”

Also winning championships for the Bobcats were Lauren Srmek and Olivia Whitney at No. 2 doubles, Megan Schmi and Meigon Conrad at No. 3 doubles as well as Carrigan Duffield and Alyssa Martin at No. 4 doubles.
