A Dowagiac man was found dead in his vehicle early Wednesday morning, after his vehicle had been driven off the road on Lakeview Drive in Wayne Township, according to a release from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

John Shilney, 74, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which deputies responded to at around 3:04 a.m. after receiving a call from a witness who found the crashed vehicle near Woodlawn in Wayne Township. Authorities believe that Shilney died from medical issues and not as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Shilney was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident, and alcohol is not believed to be a factor.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Wayne Township Fire Department and Pride Care Ambulance Service.

This incident remains under investigation.
