The Dowagiac Police Department has confirmed that a person, approximately 14, was seen near the Dowagiac Middle School at 6:40 a.m. with what appeared to be a handgun.

A custodian saw the individual and contacted 911 as well as the principal, who attempted to make contact with the individual.

The person then headed into the woods east of the building.

Police arrived and set up a perimeter to attempt to local the individual. Officers heard a single gun shot and the subject was located with what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The subject was taken to a local hospital where his condition is unknown at this time.

All Dowagiac schools were placed on lockdown and as a precaution, students were sent home and all schools have been closed for the day.

Police plan to hold another press conference at approximately 11:30 a.m.
