Chemical bank robbed, suspect at large

Police are searching for a person of unknown gender who robbed the Chemical Bank in Niles late this morning.

Niles Police Chief Jim Millin said a person wearing a coat, hat, glasses and scarf entered the bank through the Main Street doors at around 11:31 a.m. The suspect handed the teller a note indicating it was a robbery and that there was a bomb in the building.

The suspect then fled with an unknown amount of cash out the bank’s Fifth Street entrance.

Millin said no one was injured, and the suspect remains at large, although police are checking surveillance cameras in the area for clues.

The bank was evacuated.

A bomb squad was called in to examine a duffel bag left just inside the bank’s Main Street entrance. It is currently unknown what, if anything, was in the bag.
