George’s life began on Nov. 18, 1929, in Dowagiac, the son of Walter L. and Leila (Huff) Melvin and step-mother Pearl (Webster) Melvin.
George was a 1948 graduate of Dowagiac Central High School.
He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during Korea, receiving three bronze stars for his service.
George was united in marriage to the former Myra Pierson at Sister Lakes.
He was employed by the A& P Tea Co. as a meat cutter in Niles, Coldwater, Dowagiac and several other locations.
George and Myra loved to travel. They visited all 50 states, Germany, Austria and all the provinces of Canada. They spent over 20 years in Riverview, Fla.
George enjoyed bowling, and gardening in Florida. He was one of the founders of the Dowagiac Little League program and development of Russom Field in Dowagiac and a fan of U of M athletics.
His loving family includes: his wife Myra of Dowagiac; sons, Randy (Kathy) Melvin of Dowagiac, Jeff (Diane) Melvin of Dearborn Heights and Todd (Kathy) Melvin of Waterford; grandchildren, Brent (Melissa) Melvin, Brian (Ashley) Melvin, Sara Melvin, Tanner Melvin, Kelsey Melvin, Cody Melvin, Trevor Melvin, Justin Kidd and Cheyenne Kidd; great-grandchildren, Skylar, Natalee, Olivia and Jordyn Melvin, Katelin Glon and Kaylee Patterson; step-sister, Betty Reshore; and two nieces and one nephew.
George passed away on Monday, Nov.26, 2012, at Forest Glen Assisted Living.
George is preceded in death by his parents. His family will gather with friends on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Yazel and Clark Chapel, where his funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday led by Pastor John Kasper.
Military honors will be rendered at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery. Memorial contributions in George’s name may be directed to Dowagiac Little League.
