Big inning helps Brandywine split

A three-run third inning in the first game helped the Brandywine baseball team to a Lakeland Conference split with visiting Buchanan Tuesday.

The Bobcats took the opener 5-2, but dropped the nightcap 11-9 in a game that featured a double, a triple and two home runs.

The big blow in the third inning was a two-run triple by Brian Kline that just got under the Buchanan center fielder’s glove. Kline would then score on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

The Bucks cut the lead to 3-1 with a run in the fourth, but two runs for Brandywine in the fifth sealed the victory.

Buchanan capped the scoring with a single run in the sixth.

Alex Erwin picked up the victory for the Bobcats as he went the distance, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts.

“Alex Erwin pitched very well today,” Brandywine coach David Sidenbender said. “He has really been a true ace this year even though we have not always given him a lot of support.

“Brian Kline really had a nice day at the plate — a double and two triples. As a team though, we just couldn’t get the big hit or make the play to win the second game.”

Cash Krumrie took the loss for the Bucks. Dalton Shearer worked the final two innings for Buchanan.

Brandywine finished with just five hits in the contest, including a double by Trevor Jones.

In the second game, the Bucks scored four runs in the first and five runs in the third inning to rally and earn the split.

Krumrie had a home run for Buchanan.

Brandywine, which finished with eight hits, got a home run from Buck Bourdon, while Kline doubled and tripled.

Shearer picked up the victory. Michael Schoenleber took the loss for the Bobcats.

“Even though we split, I feel real good about or chances in the tournament,” Sidenbender said. “It should be real interesting.”
