Reader disappointed by Star

Published 7:32am Thursday, June 2, 2011

Dear editor:

I was born in Niles 75 years ago and love this town and the people who live here.

I cannot believe there isn’t enough local news to fill pages of the Niles Daily Star. What happened?

For years I looked forward to the daily delivery for news of our town. At least you do print obituaries. But what about other news and events that touch our daily lives?

As a senior citizen, I don’t get out and about as much as I used to and I look forward to the paper to keep me informed on what is happening. However, I must settle for who passed away and who is having a garage sale.

Come on, people. Let’s have some Niles news other than the same news repeated three times a day word for word on the local TV news.

I’m sure if anyone cared there would be enough news of local people and events to fill several pages like the Niles Daily Star used to do.

Niles

  1. When I was in the 7th and 8th Grade, and delivered the Star,
they were published for a Nickel 6 days a week.
Times were easy, and prices lower than today.
Times got harder and harder, and Newspapers consolidated.
this caused them to lose large local news rooms, Printers, the mail rooms,
    and pressmen.
and created Consolidated News rooms, instead of,
a Niles only publication, it became an are paper.
Papers now need volunteer input, as the price of
publishing a paper is smaller than ever.
People who have local events that need to be covered.
Should submit those to the Paper in a Timely manner
    with photo’s if possible.
I know of no editor who would not consider such for
publication, in the paper, with their names included with
    the publishing.
Who knows We might have a clark Kent, or Doris lane,
    hidden out there.
