Leonard Dalton Barkes / Sept. 12, 1942-Nov. 10, 2009
Published 9:16am Thursday, November 12, 2009Leonard’s life began on Sept. 12, 1942, in South Bend, Ind., the son of Morgan Orestes and Laura Adaline (Eddy) Barkes.
Leonard, 67, of Dowagiac, was married on June 14, 1969, to the former Peggy Dykes in Dowagiac.
Leonard worked for several years at Clark Equipment, then went to work for Creative Foa, from where he retired.
He enjoyed fishing and camping. Leonard was a very talented woodworker.
His loving family includes: his wife, Peggy Barkes of Dowagiac; his children, Phylis (Larry) Koppman of Summerville, S.C.; James (Rena) Turnbow of Mishawaka, Ind.; Ben Turnbow and Tom Turnbow, both of Dowagiac; Bruce (Lori) Turnbow of Cassopolis; Yvonne (David Jones) Leighton of Elwood, Ind.; and Jeff Turnbow of Niles; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Delores Garlit of Marshville, Mo., and Wynona Joyce Lunk of Niles; and a brother, Clifford (Mary) Barkes of Edwardsburg.
Leonard passed away Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at his home.
He is preceded in death by a brother, William Jessie Barkes.
His family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-6 p.m. at Yazel-Clark Chapel (McLauchlin-Clark), where his funeral service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. led by Pastor Scott Wiles.
He will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Mishawaka.

Leonard (Oatsy) severed in the Navy at Naval Facility Barbados WI from 1961 to 1962. It was a pleasure to serve with him. We had many good times in Barbados. We will miss him.
