MARCELLUS – Evelyn A. Swartz, 99, of 18583 Church St., Marcellus, passed away Monday morning, Nov. 9, 2009, at her residence following a four-month illness.

She was born Nov. 5, 1910, in Marcellus Township, daughter of Fred and Cora A. (Wolfe) Butchbaker.

On Sept. 11, 1932, in Marcellus, she married Edwin H. Swartz.

Her husband preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 2002.

She graduated from Marcelus High School in 1929 and attended Davenport College in Grand Rapids.

She was a charter member of Volinia Baptist Church and taught Sunday school for 40 years. In her church she formerly was a deaconess, choir leader, junior church leader and a co-leader of the pioneer girl’s club.

Surviving are: two sons, Arlen R. (Patricia) Swartz of Dowagiac and Ronald C. (Patricia) Swartz of Marcellus; seven grandchildren, Kevin (Annette) Swartz of Three Rivers, Mark (Sally) Swartz, Tricia (Mark) Zuhl and Brian Swartz, all of Dowagiac, and Denise (Stephen) Hutson, Karen (Allan) Surdell and Michaele (Tim) Henry, all of Marcellus; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Mary Butchbaker and Erma Swartz; and several nieces and nephews.

Three sisters and one brother precede her in death.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at Volinia Baptist Church, with Dr. Thomas G. Stout and Pastor Tim Perry officiating.

Burial follows in Marcellus Cemetery. Her family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mater Funeral Home, Marcellus.
